To remove it, grab an 8mm. there is a bolt on top that looks like it is there for decoration. Turn that one, it works like a worm drive, as you loosen that, the jaws open. As for the corrosion, that is usually a sign of a lose terminal, or a possible bad ground. Check the connections.
